Botswana - Africa’s exciting new coal and energy province

Botswana represents Africa’s exciting new coal and energy province, and has generated considerable buzz within the African and international coal , energy and investment industries. Botswana represents 66% of Africa’s known coal resources – over 210 billion tonnes (some suggest this will rise to over 320 billion tonnes), making it Africa’s second largest coal resource.

There are many comparisons with the exciting rapid developments we have seen recently with Mozambique’s coal sector (as well as South Africa’s Waterberg region)– with numerous exploration companies actively engaging in significant exploration programmes in the country. Botswana is crawling with exploration and development teams from Australia, Canada, South Africa and many others who are planning to develop Botswana’s immense coal wealth. China and India have made no secret of their need to import large volumes of thermal coal in the years to come to fuel their growth, and Botswana coal is on the radar as a potential supplier.

How long will it be before one of the major mining houses or Asian utilities make a significant investment in the industry? Find  out by attending this exciting new event  !

More about Botswana Coal and Energy

It’s not just export coal that is generating the interest from industry players, but the enormous potential for the development of a domestic coal bed methane and underground coal gasification industry in Botswana. Some analysts have commented that Africa is “long” on minerals, but “short” on energy. One only needs to take stock of the current electricity generation shortfalls in southern Africa to realise the incredible potential there is for new power generating plant to be built in Botswana, powered by domestic coal, CBM or UCG. Botswana is geographically blessed by having a central position within southern Africa, allowing for tremendous potential for power generation export to many of its neighbours who have a high demand for electricity.

Opportunities abound for savvy investors who are looking to step up and develop new rail and infrastructure corridors to the east and west Africa ports in Namibia, Mozambique and South Africa. Substantial opportunities abound for investment in new transmission lines, energy networks, coal handling and preparation plants, new generation power plant and much much more.
